Great Cloud of Witnesses
Carolyn Arends
I was just four, my grandmother’s place
I knelt by her sofa and started this race
And now I’ve been running for such a long while
I’ve kind of lost track of the miles
Sometimes I press on, sometimes I look back
Sometimes I just lay in the road on my back
When I’ve got to get up and I don’t know how
I hear in the distance the roar of a crowd
It’s the great cloud of witnesses
Cheering me on each step that I go
It’s the great cloud of witnesses
They say the finish is worth every inch of the road
Moses is there, up in his seat
With my Grandad Wilfred, my Nana Bernice
There’s Abraham, Isaac and my buddy Rich
And I think they’re shouting "don’t quit"
So if you are tired, and your back is sore
If you’re not so sure you can run anymore
Then just take a moment and listen real close
Do you hear a sound like a heavenly host?
It’s the great cloud of witnesses
Cheering us on each step that we go
It’s the great cloud of witnesses
They say the finish is worth every inch of the road
It’s friends and relations and each generation of saints who believed
And received The Prize
They have looked into His eyes
It’s the great cloud of witnesses …

Any Given Sunday

Any Given Sunday
words and music by Carolyn Arends
Any given Sunday
Folks are congregating
In cathedrals and gymnasiums
And everything between
There’s liturgy that some say
And some are rock ‘n rollin’
But rest assured most everyone
Will take an offering
There’s confusion and confession
Interruption, intercession
Holiness and imperfection
Any given Sunday
Any given Sunday
Preachers do their preaching
Some with whispers, some with shouts
They all go way past noon
And you can count on singing
There’s every kind of music
There’s hymns and Bach and folk and pop
And most of it’s in tune
Hearts are mending, hearts are breaking
There’s some giving and some taking
Some folks find what some are faking
Any given Sunday
And God is in His heaven
But He’s also in those pews
I bet sometimes He’s angry
And that sometimes He’s amused
But we can know for certain
That His heart is always moved
By the praises of His children
Yeah, He’s always glad to hear them
And that’s why it really matters
That two or more are gathered
Any given Sunday
Any given Sunday
We get to remember
In the bread and in the wine
Just as we are, we come
And in those holy moments
Every heart that’s tender
Joins with those around the world
Who love and know the Son
‘Cause there’s an everlasting song
The saints of every time belong
And we can come and join the throng
On any given Sunday

Getting Ready for Glory

Getting Ready For Glory
Carolyn Arends
She’s had 80-some years, most of them good
But she’s not gonna be here much longer
Now the body gets weak like she knew it would
But the Spirit just keeps getting stronger
She’s got her Bible and hymn-book beside her
She’s storing those psalms and old songs up inside her
She’s getting ready, she’s getting ready
She’s getting ready for glory
She’s getting ready, she’s getting ready
She’s getting ready for glory
She knows all of the verses to How Great Thou Art
And her soul, it doth magnify often
And she’s gonna keep learning the Scriptures by heart
Till the day she is laid in her coffin
She wants to be sure when the angels come take her
That she’s got some greetings for meeting her Maker
Chorus
She will tell us if we’ll only listen
It’s not about dying, it’s all about living
And whether you’re young or the end’s getting near
There’s just one reason why God has us here
We’re getting ready, we’re getting ready
We’re getting ready for glory
We’re getting ready, we’re getting ready
We’re getting ready for glory
We’ll sing it by heart…How Great Thou Art
Until the day we see your face…

Your Laugh
Carolyn Arends
There’s popcorn in the microwave and pillows on the couch
Baby, come sit down here by my side
I rented us that movie everyone told us about
Your brother said he laughed until he cried
Well I won’t mention I’ve seen this one before
I don’t want you to notice that I’m really watching for…
Your laugh, baby
To me it’s just like helium
I breathe it in until I am
Ten feet off the ground
Oh, your laugh darlin’
It warms me up like sunshine
It is golden, it is so fine
Baby, when you laugh
I don’t know how it happened, no, it wasn’t in my plan
But you’re the heart that beats inside my chest
Your sorrows are my sorrows now and when you’re glad I am
Very nearly drunk with happiness
So watch the movie, and I’ll be watching you
I’m sorry, I can’t help it, you just don’t know what you do
With your laugh, baby…
If you laugh too loud, you know, you’ll wake the baby up
But really, that will be alright with me
We’ll just pause the movie and I’ll warm a bottle up
And you can bounce our boy upon your knee
It makes him happy, playing with his dad
It’s some kind of miracle, this little boy who has…
Your laugh, baby…

Half a Million Reasons
04:52
|
|||
Written by Carolyn Arends and Connie Harrington.
What’s the matter with this world?
Why does everything have to be so hard?
What’s the point in even getting out of bed
In the morning?
I can think of
A half a million reasons
You should get up
Even when you’re thinking
No one cares and what’s the use
Why would anyone need you
Well I can think of half a million reasons
Who else would know just when to call?
When to lend a shoulder, when to give me a shove?
Why does it always feel so good to see your face
In my doorway?
I can think of…
There’s still a lot of things in life for you
Faith is one and hope is two
Love should count for three or four
And if you’ve got time for more
I can think of
A half a million reasons
You should get up
Even when you’re thinking
No one cares and what’s the use
Why does anyone need you
I do, and that’s the truth
And I can think of half a million reasons
Why

Who You Are
Carolyn Arends
Built from clay and breath of God
This is who you are
Made to house eternal love
This is who you are
Matter and spirit combined
This is who you are
Temple for the Lord Most High
This is who you are
Echo of creation’s song
This is who you are
Remnant of the Chosen Ones
This is who you are
Ember of a holy fire
This is who you are
Object of the King’s desire
This is who you are
Who you are, who you are
Who you are, who you are
Heaven sings this song to you…
This is who you are
Little lamb who wanders off
This is who you are
One the Shepherd won’t leave lost
This is who you are
Rescued by His sacrifice
This is who you are
Now the hands and feet of Christ
This is who you are
Who you are, who you are…
Hear the Father call your name
Shine with His eternal flame
Bear His image in your soul
This is who you are
Listen ‘til you finally know
This is who you are
